Training camp

絶体絶命の状況下で臨んだ2022年合宿は金曜日のボイトレに始まり、翌朝からは12時間近くに及ぶ猛練習で、なんとかトンネルの出口は見え始めた。合宿の楽しそうな写真とは裏腹に、練習の内容は超ディテールにこだわり、現代曲のマスターワークスとも言える三宅悠太作曲の「修司の海」の一つ一つのフレーズ、一つ一つのメッセージの音楽的な描写を追求した。その結果、本当は定演ナンバー全17曲練習するはずだったのに、3分程の一楽章に4時間も練習時間割いてしまった。ビジネス的には非効率。でも終わりがないマスターワークスの追求をしないと、聴いている人は感動しない。多分コンサートのその日になっても目標には辿り着けないだろうけれども、そもそもマスターワークを完璧に歌うということは無理であって、それに近づこうとするその行為こそが芸術の真髄だと思う。だから団員の1/3が今年合唱を始めたメンバーでも立派なコンサートが成り立つだろうし、プロとしてやっている人も我々のことを聴けば学ぶものはあるに違いない。今年のセカンドテナーは7人中6人が新人です。

We went into the fall camp in quite a disarray, with so many issues completing many challenging masterpieces. It began with voice training on Friday evening, followed by an incredible 12-hour practice marathon the following day. Though the plan was to cover all 17 songs that we are going to sing for our concert, we ended up spending 4 hours practicing one piece - a 3 minute piece - a movement from Yuta Miyake’s ”Sea with Shuji”. Even in this age of productivity, it is necessary to spend a great deal of time to ponder about each phrase, each word, and nuance. Because doing so is the only way to get close to the beauty hidden in the masterworks we are singing, and to allow audience to share in that discovery.
